Tomorrow we read the Torah portion “Yitro, And Jethro, priest of Midian”
(and later, the prophet our friends),
About Druze allies, children’s names, and international law.

The portion opens with Jethro arriving for a visit, together with his two grandsons:
Gershom- “for I was a stranger in a foreign land,”
and Eliezer- “for the God of my father was my help.”

During this short visit, Jethro establishes the Hebrew judicial system
officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens.
And now? All that’s left is the law itself.

For that purpose, the Children of Israel enter the desert of Sinai (15).

There, at the bottom of the mountain, they receive the international moral law-
the Ten Commandments.

How international is it?
Here in the United States alone, there are dozens of monuments and artworks depicting them.

And at the very the heart of the Ten Commandments:
"Honor your father and your mother" and "you shall not murder"
The Bible affirms life!!

and this week, the local justice system has also charged him with terrorism.

In the Haftarah, as war approaches Jerusalem,
Isaiah and his son Shear-Jashub ascend
“to the upper pool, on the road to the Fullers’ Field”
(the nearby Bethesda),
and calm the people, assuring them that all will be well:
“For a child is born to us…
and his name shall be called
'Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Minister of Peace.”

May we strengthen the covenant with our Druze brothers-in-law,
and bring more children into the world,
“so that our days may be prolonged upon the land
that the Lord our God gives us.”

As the Haftarah concludes:
“Of the increase of authority and of peace there shall be no end,
upon the throne of David and over his kingdom,
to establish it and to uphold it
with justice and with righteousness
from now and forever.”
