https://youtu.be/sFjLQkNp4as

And this week in our segment: Eretz DC Yerushalaim:
🎶 Am Yisrael Chai?? 🎶
https://youtu.be/sFjLQkNp4as
Tomorrow we read the Torah portion “Vayigash – And Judah approached.”
about antisemitism, anthems, and freedom of speech.
After Joseph imprisons Benjamin, Judah uses freedom of speech, takes leadership, and steps forward to confront Joseph.
Does he accuse him of “violating a ceasefire”?
No. not at all!
Instead, Judah delivers a deeply moving speech about their father Jacob and the responsibility he personally assumed for the unity and survival of the family.
Following this speech, Joseph breaks down and asks the question that later becomes the opening line of our unofficial anthem:
🎶 “Is my father still alive?” Od Avinu Chay?🎶
When the answer is yes, Pharaoh sends humanitarian aid to enable Jacob’s 'voluntary migration' to Egypt.
The children of Israel settle in the land of Goshen
and help manage the kingdom.
People often repeat the claim that “Jews control everything.”
Is that so? Let's check..
There are 22 places in the United States named Goshen, precisely because of this biblical story.
The real question is:
Instead of constantly defending ourselves, will we begin to take pride and tell the story in its entirety?
A story in which the Children of Israel do only “good and more good,”
helping transform a kingdom into an empire.
The Egyptians themselves acknowledge this, saying:
“You have saved our lives.”
Apartheid?
they ask:
“Let us and our land be servants to Pharaoh give us seed, that we may live and not die.”
And Joseph provides, because he is not in favor of genocide..
The Haftarah this week is from Ezekiel 37.
Its first part describes the Vision of the Dry Bones, the source of the words:
“Our hope has not yet been lost.” Od lo avda tikvatenu- the Israeli national anthem
The second part which is read as the Haftarah speaks of becoming one nation under the leadership of Judah, without civil war:
“I will make them one nation in the land, upon the mountains of Israel one king shall be king over them all and they shall no longer be two nations,
nor divided into two kingdoms again.”
Yesterday, our neighbors celebrated the birth of a Jew born in Bethlehem of Judah.
I'm the picture- the enemy’s narrative.
Why is this narrative so successful here in the United States?
Because Bethlehem of Judah matters deeply to our neighbors.
So the question is:
Who speaks about Bethlehem of Judah us, or our adversaries?
Of course, our brother Ron Gurevich, “whose soul is bound with ours,” is of utmost importance, and we pray for his swift return.
However, at the same time if 🎶 Am Yisrael is truly to live,🎶
and not merely survive from one attack or pogrom to the next
Will we take responsibility?
Will we use freedom of speech, approach, and tell Americans about our father Jacob, who journeyed from Be’er Sheva to Goshen?
instead of speaking only about “the right to self-defense” or Germany in the 1930s..
So that we may truly
'be a free people in our own land.'
Here in DC, we will speak about the Bible
'Eretz Zion and Jerusalem.'
A Shabbat in which the Haftarah concludes:
“I will make with them a covenant of peace…
and the nations 🇺🇸 shall know
that I sanctify Israel 🇮🇱,
when My sanctuary is in their midst forever.”
