"""bring THEM home"""

And this week in Eretz DC Yerushalaim:

Tomorrow we read Parashat “These Are the Names of the Children of Israel Who Came Down to Egypt”
about hospitality, apartheid, and common language.
Just before Joseph dies, he insists on being returned to burial in the Promised Land.
Yet, for unclear reasons (most likely convenience), even after
“Joseph died, and all his brothers, and that entire generation”
the Children of Israel remain in Egypt.
“They multiplied and grew exceedingly strong, and the land was filled with them”
much like the demographic survey published this week.
So God moves on to Plan B.
“A new king arose over Egypt, who did not know Joseph”
(Is Mamdani the 1st?).
From welcomed guests, they become slaves.
Moses, the adopted son in the royal palace, sees
“an Egyptian striking a Hebrew, one of his brothers”
and out of moral duty to defend his brother,/ he violates an international law:
“He struck the Egyptian and buried him in the sand.”
He flees to Midian, where once again he confronts local shepherds to defend the one who is right.
Jethro hears of this and immediately invites him into his home.
The hospitality is so generous that Zipporah gives birth to Gershom, saying:
“For I was a stranger in a foreign land.”
Moses goes out to tend the flock and encounters the burning bush.
God commands him to go down to Egypt in order to
""bring THEM home""
and provides him with a list of signs to prove to the Israelites he was sent by God.
At the end, he is given a sign that is also a threat.
A threat that materialized two years ago:
“If they do not believe… take water from the Nile and pour it on the dry land,
and the water shall turn to blood.”
And on Simchat Torah, the festival on which we are judged for water
before we even managed to pray for rain, we received a flood (Al-Aqsa),
and the water?
Turned to blood.. so much blood…
And we
have we learned how to host?
Or at least to cry out: "Why do you strike your fellow?"
With the prayer that our brother Ran Gvieli,
who “went out to see the welfare of his brothers and struck fourteen Egyptians who struck his Hebrew brothers,
will return
so that we may 'bury him in the sand.' kever israel
And together with all of Israel,
including “those lost in the land of Assyria and those cast away in the land of Egypt,”
we shall ascend together and
“bow to the Lord on the holy mountain in Jerusalem.”
Only let us not forget:
“Remove your shoes from your feet,
for the place is holy ground.”
