מתחילים בהכנת המחנה;

Elul in Eretz DC Yerushalaim:
🎶If an encampment encamps against me, my heart will not fear, and if war rises against me, in this I trust🎶
https://youtu.be/Yd7hSHunoWw

This week we began to add Psalm 27,
and tomorrow we will read in the parsha "When you go out to war against your enemies, and God will give them into your hand, and you will capture their captives"
about encampment, the war and its costs.

The parsha is filled with various laws, we will focus on the laws of war in it.
We begin by preparing the encampment;
"When you camp against your enemies and you shall be kept from all evil .. for God walks in your camp, to save you and to give your enemies before you and your camp shall be holy"

So the camp is ready, now we need to instill morale in the warriors-
the reason for the war:
"Remember what Amalek did to you that struck your hindmost .. And when you have rested from all your enemies around in the land that the Lord is giving you as an inheritance to possess you shall blot out the memory of Amalek; you shall not forget it."

Sounds very aggressive.. What is the thing that needs to be remembered and not forgotten?
For example, "If a man finds a girl in the field and seizes her and lies with her-
the man shall die! For when he rises up against his neighbor and murders a soul, so is this thing! For she was found in the field and there was no one to rescue her"

Sounds familiar? How can you forget…

Our laws of war command exactly the opposite!
"And if you see a beautiful woman in captivity… and if you do not desire her- you must send her away, you shall not sell her for money! You shall not oppress her!!"

Yes, captivity is part of the price of war, (see the opening verse)

There are laws on how to treat captives, and punishment for those who violate them:
"If a man is found stealing a soul of his brother of the children of Israel, and he oppresses him and sells him- that thief Dies"

And if the captive dies, then bring him to burial as soon as possible!
"His corpse shall not lie dormant.. for you shall bury him on that day."

And today, after 16,135 days, 'that day' has arrived. Our captive brother Judah Katz was brought to the grave of Israel.

In the Haftarah, the prophet Isaiah encourages the people; "Enlarge the place of your tent" (a scout's tent, of course)
"Do not be afraid! For you will break out to the right and to the left,
and your seed – will inherit Gentiles.
and the cities – souls will inhabit."

How is he so sure?
For although "the mountains may depart and the hills may be removed, my mercy from you will not depart, and my covenant of peace will not be removed."

We wish the Katz family who are sitting Shiva and all camp of Israel a Sabbath in which the wish will be fulfilled:
🎶One thing I have asked of God that I will ask for – to dwell in the house of God all the days of my life to behold the beauty of God and to visit His temple🎶
